About

Elle Carter NealWelcome! I’m Elle Carter Neal, author of the teen science-fantasy novel Madison Lane and the Wand of Rasputin, which is due out in April. I live in Australia with my husband and two amazing children.

I write across a few different genres, but mainly fantasy, science fiction, and suspense, and I’m currently focusing on books for children between the ages of 8 and 14 (but, of course, since I enjoy reading books meant for this age-group, I expect many other adults do, too).

Friendship, particularly the strength of platonic relationships, is one of the main themes that feature in my stories. You’re in the right place if you enjoy aspects such as the relationship between Fitz and the Fool from Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy, Leo and Mimi from Emily Rodda’s Rondo Trilogy, Leslie and Jess of The Bridge to Terabithia, or a group dynamic like those in Kate Forsyth’s StarThorn Trilogy.

I also love tumbling into a fantasy world that opens up in some way from our contemporary world, making it that much more possible that any one of us could have an adventure in Wonderland, Narnia, or Hogwarts.

I like stories that challenge my assumptions and give me a glimpse of a completely different perspective. The Matrix was one of the movies that started me on a hunt for the perfect mind-bending story. More recently the television show Fringe has satisfied my addiction to complex, multi-faceted tales with a twist.

Strong women feature heavily in my stories, and I’m interested in writing away from some tropes that have sprung up around female characters. One of my favourite “light” TV shows was Charmed, which I loved because of the fearless female protagonists and their ability to handle any situation with the help of their magical powers.

If these are elements that you enjoy, too, then I’ll have a story (or two) for you. Make yourself at home.

  1. Elle – Congrats on getting your new book ready to publish! I noted that the draft cover you posted on The Blood Red Pencil needs help:

    1) The lettering/font style is cute and medieval, but less legible than ideal, especially with the drop- shadow. Consider losing the drop-shadow and making it darker.
    2) Your name at the bottom is impossible to read.
    3) To give your title and name more space to be bold, consider losing the countryside and using only your MC on the carpet and reduced in size.
    4) Another thought I had (assuming you do #3) is to “enhance” the magic wand in your MC’s hand — sparkles or something. That way, the image echoes the title.

    Good Luck!

  2. Thanks for your helpful comment, John. The cover does still need a lot of work and I’ll certainly take your pointers on board.
